| Why “Asskam”?
“Asskam” is the contraction of “Association Kamathipura”. Kamathipura is the name of one of the main districts in the city of Mumbai. Who does Asskam help? Asskam’s motto is “caring for and educating underprivileged children”. Asskam helps the children in Kamathipura by providing them with food, shelter and medical care whilst their mothers work at night. Every night 100 children seek refuge from the streets of Kamathipura in our night-care shelter. What do the children do at the night-care centre? When the children are first dropped off by their mothers, they wash themselves, then they eat and play until it is time to go to bed. In the morning, the older children go to the local school whilst the younger children attend the nursery opened especially for them in the centre. What future do the children have? Asskam works hard to ensure that children are given a decent future. It ensures that all the children in the night care centre attend school, it helps them find vocational training and to learn a trade. To help them along the path to independence and to better protect them, Asskam is building a home for 150 girl children in a Mumbai suburb. This building should be completed in 2007/08. |
